“No water, no life, no blue, no green” is a quote from the US Oceanic scientist,
Sylvia Earle who campaigns for the wellbeing of the world’s oceans. As an open
water swimmer, that imperative balance of our oceans health has become absolutely
apparent to me. Episodes of contaminating industrial and agriculture effluent and
plastics detritus that are polluting our seas, rivers and lakes have become a more
regular occurrence.
My response to Earle has prompted new sculptural work that calls attention to our delicate
oceanic environment whilst reflecting the sensuous experience of
being in open water. I am particularly interested in that space between the undersea
and the surface of the sea, the place that most interacts with light and weather
conditions.
